A few moments after Plenty and Jordan left, a young man and woman came into the shop. The duo was holding hands and looked giddy. He was tall, well above six feet, boyishly cute with dark blond hair and hazel eyes, and she had a spray of freckles across her nose and auburn hair braided down her back.
Vanessa greeted them with a warm smile. âAre you two on your honeymoon?â she asked.
The girl nodded. âPete and I just got married this morning at the courthouse. It was kind of impulsive, and weâre staying in town for a couple nights to enjoy being newlyweds.â
âWell, congratulations,â I said. âHave you two been together long?â
âJust over two years,â Pete said.
âYes, congratulations,â Vanessa chimed in. âAnd where did you meet? Was it here in town?â
Pete opened his mouth to answer, but Stacie held her fingertips to his lips and looked between Vanessa and me. âWho does the readings?â
âI do,â I said, as I raised a hand.
âCan you see those kinds of things in a reading? Like, where we met?â She wanted to be convinced before handing over her money. I had to respect that.
âI can see many things when I read palms,â I said. âI think you two met in the summer, at an art festival, correct?â
Both bride and groom looked at one another, amazed. âWe did,â Stacie agreed. âHow did you know that?â
I shrugged. âI canât explain it. I just catch glimpses or impressions sometimes.â
âWhat else can you tell us,â Pete asked.
I motioned them to follow me behind the curtain. âLetâs see what your hands reveal.â
They sat across the table as I lit a candle and had them join hands and extend their free ones out to me. I dabbed a bit of oil on their palms and clasped their hands in mine.
âJust concentrate on your questions,â I told them. âImagine youâre writing the words in light or smoke above the table.â
They grew silent as they focused, and a picture began to take hold.
âYou two did meet at an art festival a couple years back. It was in town, too, practically across the street. Stacie, you were attending with a friend, and Pete was helping someone â a cousin, perhaps â man his booth.â
They both looked at one another in surprise and then back at me, nodding, their eyes eager.
I continued. âPete, you felt a spark right away when you saw Stacie, but there was hesitance on her part. Youâd just gotten over a bad breakup, and didnât want to date anyone right away. But you bought something, and Pete slipped a business card with his phone number written on the back into the bag. She was going to throw it away, but didnât. Some weeks later, you found the card and decided to give Pete a call.â
âHow do you know that?â Stacie asked. âThatâs so specific. Itâs spooky.â
I shrugged. âYou two radiate so much loving energy that itâs easy to read.â
âCan you tell us about our future?â Pete pressed.
I returned my gaze
